Dear Community Member,

What defines a community? Is it, the residents, neighborhoods, businesses, civic associations, local government, and police? Each component is vital to a strong, healthy, community. When the components work together, effective change can and will be made. The Locust Valley Neighborhood Watch wanted to take this opportunity to present ourselves to the citizenry of Locust Valley. Formed six years ago, this association has grown. Many changes have taken place and the group has evolved to become an organization that includes residents, businesses, and other civic organizations. Our goal for the year 2002 is to heighten public awareness of the Locust Valley Neighborhood Watch, increase the membership roster, finalize the incorporation process of becoming a not-for-profit organization, and create stronger ties in our village with new programs and activities such as
“Adopt-A-Spot”, Arts/Craft festivals, beautification and litter prevention, community awareness meetings, and “National Night Out”.

The LVNW meets monthly, on the first Monday of the month at the Locust Valley
Library Community Room. Our meetings start at 7:00 PM and finish at 9:00 PM. The general meetings are open to all, follow a general agenda, and may include a guest speaker for the evening. Past guest speakers have included, representatives from The Society To Preserve Underhill and the Pine Barrens Society, Nassau County Legislator Brian Muellers, Officers from the Nassau County Second Precinct, Town Of Oyster Bay officials, and candidates for local office .

The LVNW meets regularly with officials from the Nassau County Second
Precinct, Nassau County government, Town of Oyster Bay government, and elected officials from neighboring towns and villages on various quality of life issues that pertain to Locust Valley. Our mission statement defines the Locust Valley
Neighborhood Watch as such:

“THE LOCUST VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH IS AN OPEN FORUM FOR ALL LOCUST VALLEY RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES, AND ASSOCIATIONS TO MEET FOR THE PURPOSE OF EXCHANGING AND
IMPLEMENTING IDEAS AND SOLUTIONS WHOSE GOALS ARE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOODS AND QUALITY
OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY.”

The Locust Valley Neighborhood Watch membership drive for 2002 is underway.
Please take the time to fill out the enclosed form and join us. The current dues for residents, businesses, and organizations are $15.00 per year. Enclosed with this letter and membership form is a highlight sheet of our projects and activities in 2001, and the schedule of meetings for 2002. It is the desire and goal of the LVNW to make this organization accessible to all in Locust Valley.

From Skunks Misery Road to Buckram Road, Birch Hill Road to Bayville Road,
and all roads in between, working on common goals to keep Locust Valley extraordinary should be everyone’s objective.

Take the time, fill out the ONLINE MEMBERSHIP FORM, and join The Locust Valley Neighborhood Watch. Come see what a difference you can make in your community and what the LVNW has planned for 2002. If you have any questions, please contact me at (516) 676-6152. Only when we work together towards these goals can a difference be made.

Sincerely,

Leslie Schramm Hughes,
President
