HIGHLIGHTS OF LOCUST VALLEY
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH FOR 2000
May 20th was the Spring Anti-Drug Rally and March held
in conjunction with the Grenville Baker Boys and Girls Club.
Various members of the LVNW, Locust Valley Seniors, Locust Valley
Women's Club, LVSD Committee on Drugs & Alcohol, LV Intermediate
School SADD, Ancient Order Of Hibernians Mike Moran Division,
and officers from Nassau County Second Precinct joined forces
for the project.
Our keynote speaker was Legislator Brian Muellers, who presented
the LVNW with an citation of merit from the Nassau County Legislature.
The LVNW also received an additional citation of merit from Nassau
County Executive Thomas Gulotta. Legislator Muellers led off
our march in the rain through Locust Valley and helped judge
the posters that the children from the Club created for the rally
to show their opposition to drug abuse. All children with posters
were declared winners, received a personal citation, and a $50.00
savings bond. In addition, the first prize winner also received
a gift certificate donated by G. Willikers.
June and July found various members of the LVNW and
residents addressing the Town Of Oyster Bay Planning Board and
Zoning Board of Appeals on issues pertaining to quality of life
in the community. One issue was the final approval of the type
of retail use to be permitted at the corner of Forest Avenue
and 13th Street. The LVNW successfully lobbied and received the
cooperation and approval from the Zoning Board and the owner
of the property as to the type of retail use that is in keeping
with the tone of the neighborhood.
At our September general meeting we invited one and
all to come and meet Ian
Siegal, chairman of the City of Glen Cove Beautification Committee.
Topics discussed that night included the recently approved City
of Glen Cove enforcement of abandoned shopping carts and the
possibility of starting a beautification and litter prevention
program for Locust Valley.
October found the LVNW sponsoring a contest in the
LV Intermediate School
challenging the children to create posters for a new anti-drug
slogan for the Millennium. This contest was held during the school
district's Red Ribbon Week which is a national week long involvement
in all schools. Executive board members went to the LV Intermediate
School to judge the posters that were created by the children.
It was decided that all those that created posters in the Intermediate
School were winners and all received free passes to the Glen
Cove Cineplex Movies to enjoy an afternoon of fun for their hard
work.
In November the LVNW completed two important projects.
At the beginning of the month, the organization sponsored its
first litter cleanup. With the help
of volunteers and a group of teens from the Boys and Girls Club,
over thirty bags of trash were collected and disposed of from
Forest Avenue. The next planned litter cleanup will be in the
Spring.
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the first annual Holiday
Wreath program kicked off. Through the generous donations of
local businesses and residents, the LVNW decorated and distributed
fifty holiday wreaths to all businesses along Forest Avenue from
Skunks Misery Road to Weir Lane. These wreaths were presented
free of charge to encourage businesses to deck their doors and
windows for the season. The goal for 2001 is to raise additional
funds to present more wreaths in the community.
